Royal couple agree to pay the rent

Prince and Princess Michael of Kent have reached an agreement to pay rent for their apartment in Kensington Palace, it has emerged.

Until now, the cost of the apartment had been paid by the Queen, who is Prince Michael's cousin, but from 2010 the arrangement will come to an end.

It is believed that the rent will stand at £10,000 per month (£120,000 per year).

Rumour has it that until 2002, the Prince and Princess had only been paying a 'peppercorn rent' of around £69 a week for their five-bedroom, five-reception home in one of the capital's most historic royal properties.

Parliament exerted pressure on the couple to pay the going rate for their lodging given that they hold no official royal duties, while the Kents argued the accommodation was a wedding gift, giving in 1979.

Kensington Palace is notable for, among other things, being the birthplace of Queen Victoria and the former resident of the late Diana, Princess of Wales.
