Banqueting house to host prestigious awards ceremony
Last Updated: Mon 6 Oct 2008

Banqueting House in London's Whitehall is to host Cosmopolitan's annual Ultimate Women of the Year awards on November 5th.

The awards are partly decided by a specially-selected panel, which this year will include television presenter Fearne Cotton, Prime Minister Gordon Brown's wife Sarah Brown and popular R&B vocalist Jamelia.

Each year the awards honour women in respect of their work or place in society, and are split into two distinct groups: real life and celebrity.

Notable among last year's winners were Leona Lewis, who won best newcomer after success on television singing contest The X-Factor.

Men aren't entirely excluded however, as an award is also handed out to the celebrity men of the year, who last year were Alan Carr and Justin Lee Collins, who host the Friday Night Project on Channel 4.

The real life categories honour women who have overcome adversity in their lives, whether its battling personal problems or overcoming serious illness.

Banqueting House began life as a venue for entertainment for Charles I. The king enjoyed spending time at the house, until he was executed there on a scaffold outside in 1649.

London Pass holders can enjoy the historic sights of Banqueting House for free, saving up to £4.50 off the usual price of admission. ADNFCR-1693-ID-18812591-ADNFCR
