Sumo tournament at Royal Albert Hall cancelled

Published: Saturday 27th of December 2008

The global economic downturn has claimed another victim as the Japan Sumo Association announced that it has called off an exhibition tournament in London.

Due to the held at the Royal Albert Hall from October 7th to 11th next year, the event was part of a wider effort to promote the millennia-old sport around the world.

An official from the governing body told the AFP that a meeting had resulted in the decision to cancel as "it will be difficult for us to hold the event due to the financial crisis", indicating that the weakness of the pound against the yen was partly to blame.

Sumo wrestling is a cornerstone of Japanese culture and major tournaments are as high-profile in the country as the BBC Proms concerts held at the Royal Albert Hall each summer are in Britain.

The iconic London attraction would, therefore, have been a fitting venue for such a cross-cultural occasion.

LondonPass holders can enjoy the behind-the-scenes tour of the Royal Albert Hall for free, saving £8 for adults, plus 10 per cent off selected merchandise in the venue shop.
