London attractions: Countdown to 2012 Paralympics Games

Published: Wednesday 25th of August 2010

The mayor of London has marked two years to London hosting the 2012 Paralympics Games in style.

In celebration of the upcoming event, Boris Johnson joined gold medal-winning athletes to turn Trafalgar Square into a giant sports arena.

Members of the ParalympicsGB Boccia team taught the mayor how to play the extremely competitive sport that has been designed to reflect the needs and skills of severely disabled athletes.

An exuberant Mr Johnson said: "With just two years to go the message from London to visitors and Paralympics athletes is loud and clear – let the celebrations commence as the Paralympics truly come home."

The British national Boccia team lifted gold in the last Paralympics Games hosted by Beijing in 2008.

Visitors with a cultural bent of mind can also take advantage of the late opening hours announced by Tate Britain so as to enjoy some great exhibitions for things to do in London.
