Eltham Palace family 'kept lemur'
Published: Friday 15th of August 2008
As a rich and well respected family, few would associate the Courtauld family - creators of Eltham Palace - with owning unusual pets.
Revealing some lesser-known facts about famous properties in the UK, English Heritage has revealed that the Courtauld family had lavish taste and kept a pet ring-tailed lemur in its own special centrally heated sleeping quarters in their art deco mansion Eltham Palace.
The revelation comes as come of the more humorous question posed by children when visiting monuments throughout the UK.
One child, visiting Osborne house on the Isle of Wight asked if the abode was where Sharon and Ozzie Osbourne lived while a tourist at Whitby Abbey asked why the English built so many ruined castles and abbeys.
"Learning about history should be fun as well as educational…the only way to learn is to ask," Tina Corri, head of education for English Heritage commented.
