British tourism 'will withstand the economy'

Published: Sunday 19th of April 2009

Tourism in Britain will outlast the recession, it is believed, with many people not realising what opportunities lay on their own doorstep.

According to Peter Hampson, director of the British Resorts & Destinations Association, domestic tourism has suffered a bit of a knock, although things are looking up.

"Within a couple of hours you can be in the Highlands of Scotland or in the middle of Birmingham, there is such a variety," he continues.

People are likely to gradually start thinking that holidaying in the UK is better, Mr Hampson states, with so much available for all the family.

Visitors to London, for example, can take advantage of the London Pass, which gives free entry to a number of the city's top attractions.

Among them are famous attractions such as Kew Gardens, with holidaymakers also free to visit more obscure destinations such as the Fan Museum.
