West End theatre to rise from the ashes

Published: Friday 15th of May 2009

The green light has been given for a new West End theatre.

Set to be built on the site of the former Westminster Theatre - which was destroyed by fire in 2002 - the theatre will seat 314 people.

"We look forward to creating some wonderful theatre. We start programming today, and it is very exciting. There has not been a new theatre in the West End for years," Stephen Mitchelson, chief executive of London Aloft told This is London.

The eight-storey building is due to have a facade made of Portland stone, with planning chiefs expecting it to become the cultural hub of Victoria.

With the London Pass, there are a host of top attractions in the city which can be visited free of charge.

Among them is the Wernher Collection at Ranger's House, one of Greenwich's most famous galleries.
