Van Dyck returns to Hampton Court Palace
Published: Sunday 15th of February 2009
One of the most important works by Flemish painter Van Dyck has returned to what some commentators think is its rightful home in Hampton Court Palace.
The portrait of Princess Mary, the eldest daughter of Charles I, was painted in 1637 and hung at the palace until around 1648, when the king was executed and a royalist supporter by the name of Lady Aubigny fled with it to The Hague.
Having been part of numerous collection throughout Europe for more than three centuries, the painting has now been acquired on behalf of the government under the Acceptance Lieu Scheme by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council.
The work will go on display from today (Thursday, February 12th).
LondonPass holders can see this new addition to the beautiful collection at Hampton Court Palace for free, saving £13.30 for adults and £6.65 for children, along with a 20 per cent discount in the Tiltyard Cafe and the Privy Kitchen.
