Visitors planning trips to London attractions such as the Royal Albert Hall or the Curzon Soho Cinema should bring along their dancing shoes.

Travellers can shake their leg at any of the 850 dance events across the capital of culture.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson joined Sheridan Smith of Legally Blonde fame, dance champion Camilla Dallerup and celebrity choreographer Jerry Mitchell to kick of T-Mobile's Big Dance 2010.

Organised by the Society of London Theatre the aim of the event is to get Londoners as well as travellers involved in the massive dance project that is estimated to reach 1.2 million people.

Mayor Johnson said: "London is one of the world's greatest centres for dance, with enormous creative talent to be found here. But it's also about getting more active, or simply having fun – and it's a brilliant way to bring people together. So be inspired, get moving and let's get three million involved by 2012."
