Sunny weather brings out London shoppers

Published: Tuesday 21st of July 2009

Last month's retail figures show that shoppers made use of the sunny weather by hitting the country's high streets.

Sales in the capital increased by 4.7 per cent compared to 1.4 per cent in the rest of the country, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) London Retail Sales Monitor shows.

Discounting across some stores also helped boost sales in London, the figures revealed, with clothing and footwear performing especially well.

BRC director-general Stephen Robertson said: "Sunshine and sales helped boost London retail sales.

"Footfall in the capital was well up on a year ago, as shoppers sought out summer clothes, sandals and other goods."

Shoppers also headed to London from Europe, cashing in on the weakness of the pound.
