Published: Friday 21st of January 2011
If you are planning a weekend break in the capital city then you're bound to want to find things to do in the evening as well as during the day.
Of course, in a world-class city like London, you'll never be short of places to go but one of the top experiences is to see a West End show and how better to spend your night than singing along to some of your favourite tunes at a musical?
According to Visit London, We Will Rock You - the show based around rock band Queen - is currently the most popular.
The musical features hits from the famous band, with the remaining members performing songs such as Radio Ga Ga, Bohemian Rhapsody and A Kind of Magic, as you follow the story of Galileo in a futuristic world where rock music has been banned and he has to save the planet.
More than 30 of Queen's biggest hits are featured throughout the show so you're bound to be singing along before the final curtain falls.
But if 80s rock music isn't your thing, then why not consider the classic Les Miserables?
Now the capital's longest running West End musical, Les Miserables has been performed on stages around London for 23 years, initially opening at the Barbican before moving on to various other venues.
It is now showing at the Queen's Theatre, where it has been since 2004. Set in 19th century France, Les Miserables tells the story of a former criminal struggling to take care of his daughter amid hardships, injustice and revolution.
And it isn't just in London that Les Miserables is popular, the musical has been translated into 21 languages and played to over 55 million people across the world.
If you are spending time seeing London's attractions with children, you may want to treat them to a trip to the West End and what better show to choose than The Lion King?
Based on the acclaimed Disney film and featuring music from Elton John and Tim Rice, you and your kids are sure to be singing along in no time and you'll love the elaborate costumes and puppets, which cover everything from the majestic animals of the African plains to birds, fish and even insects.
There is so much choice when it comes to musicals in London's West End that you will be able to find a performance that takes your interest.
Completing the top five most popular musicals, according to Visit London, are Chicago and Phantom of the Opera.
Chicago is currently running at the Cambridge Theatre and regularly welcomes famous faces from the big and small screen to join its cast.
Meanwhile, Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera takes to the stage each night at Her Majesty's Theatre.
The long-running musical is an epic love story based on a novel by Gaston Leroux and is a firm favourite with audiences in the West End, as well as a multi-award-winning production.
So, if you're planning a weekend of sightseeing at various London attractions, don't forget to arrange an exciting excursion for your evenings! Going to the West End to see a famous and well-loved musical should certainly be high on your list of things to do in London.
