Russian constructivism in the spotlight at Tate Modern
Published: Wednesday 11th of February 2009
The Russian constructivist work of two of the country's leading artistic figures is being showcased in a new exhibition at Tate Modern.
Rodchenko and Popova: Defining Constructivism takes a comprehensive look at the work of these two seminal artists, whose output served as a barometer for the attitudes and growth of the new Russia in the early years of the 20th century.
The Guardian's art critic Adrian Searle said: "How energetic and optimistic a movement Russian constructivism was. Even at its most formal and austere, there is a verve and a dash about it. Paintings come at you on the tilt, as if sailing before a high wind."
In the Times, Rachel Campbell-Johnston reflected: "Here is the art of the Russian Revolution: clear, strong, insistent and iconoclastic. As you walk through this show, it takes over your imagination - a bit like Bolshevik troops once took over Red Square."
