Polish artist wins Tate Modern commission
Published: Saturday 7th of February 2009
A leading Polish artist has been awarded the commission for one of the most prized – and potentially most controversial – exhibition spaces in British art.
Miroslaw Balka will be charged with creating work for the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern and will face a challenge that has previously tested the creative imagination of such art world luminaries as Anish Kapoor, Louise Bourgeois, Rachel Whiteread and current incumbent Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster.
The Guardian's art critic Adrian Searle has described Balka as a "great choice" for the imposing 3,400 square metre space.
"The echoing space, the concrete floor, the long perspective down the ramp of Tate Modern present ideal possibilities for Balka, whose work has always concerned itself with history, disquiet and unease."
Balka's work, fulfilling the 10th Unilever commission for the famous space, will be unveiled on October 13th.
