Dew-Drenched Furze donated to Tate Britain
Published: Saturday 14th of March 2009
A landscape painting by John Everett Millais has been donated to Tate Britain, it has been announced.
The painting, called Dew-Drenched Furze, is believed to have been painted in Scotland around 1890 and has been donated to the gallery by the late artist's grandson.
Stephen Deuchar, director of Tate Britain, comments: "This exquisite work is one of the finest examples of Millais' late landscapes.
"It will significantly enhance Tate's holdings from this important period in his oeuvre."
The picture depicts a wintry morning, with sun streaming through gorse, a scene which Millais is thought to have believed was impossible to paint.
It had previously been on loan to the Tate between 1996 and 2000 but has now been made a permanent resident of the London gallery.
