UK 'set to become city for sport'

Published: Thursday 5th of March 2009

The UK has a number of events heading its way over the coming years, one expert says, which makes London the ideal place to begin a holiday.

Bernard Donoghue, head of government and public affairs at VisitBritain, claims there is a "decade of sport" lined up for the country, which gives a perfect opportunity for those thinking of holidaying here.

He says the schedule includes "the Ryder Cup in Wales, Twenty20 cricket, the Commonwealth Games in 2014, the Olympics Games in 2012 and potentially the football World Cup in 2018", making the UK a haven for sports fans.

London already has its fair share of sporting attractions for tourists to consider while they wait for these high-profile events, with a number of museums and tours giving an insight into some of the world's greatest venues.

For example, with the London Pass, visitors can gain free entry to the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum, home of the world-famous tennis tournament.
