Things to do in London: London Olympics 'must attract right crowds'

Published: Sunday 28th of February 2010

The London Olympics must attract the right crowds, says Seb Coe.

Coe, writing in the Evening Standard, was drawing on his experiences at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver this month.

The former athlete was keen to emphasise that it is not just the stadiums that need attention. Live sites with big screens outside of arenas across the city, be they in a park or a museum in Docklands, must be one of the top London attractions in 2012.

Coe acknowledged that the London 2012 Games committee wanted to create a similar atmosphere to Vancouver.

"The stadiums in Vancouver and courses in Whistler were packed. And they were full of the right people - real sports fans with knowledge of their sport," Coe enthused.

The head of the Games' organising committee wants the events of Vancouver to inspire the city of London and capture the imagination of people right across the country.

Earlier this month, the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich was granted planning permission that will enable them to host Olympic shooting events.
