Radcliffe out of the running for marathon title

Published: Saturday 7th of March 2009

The London Marathon is to go ahead this year without its three-time winner Paula Radcliffe, who has been forced to pull out of the race.

She broke her toe in training, meaning the 35-year-old will no longer be able to compete in this year's event.

"I am desperately disappointed especially as I was looking forward to running in front of the amazing crowds of spectators in London," she revealed.

The sportswoman is believed to have suffered the injury while training in Albuquerque, New Mexico, earlier this week.

Race director David Bedford said the incident was an unfortunate blow for Radcliffe, urging her to get herself fit and healthy for the World Championships.

Earlier this week, Bernard Donoghue, head of government and public affairs at VisitBritain, said the country is looking forward to hosting a number of sporting events over the coming years, including the Ryder Cup and the 2012 Olympics.

Sports fans can take their pick from a number of sporting attractions with their London Pass, including the Chelsea FC Stadium Tour and the Wimbledon Tour Experience.
