Published: Monday 27th of April 2009

Sammy Wanjiru scooped first place in the London Marathon yesterday (April 26th).

The Kenyan beat-off competition from thousands of other runners, which included celebrity participants such as Gordon Ramsey, Peter Andre and Katie Price.

"From the start the pace was good but the last 10km were very hard, the course was up and down and I ran alone," Wanjiru told the BBC.

Claiming the women's title was Germany's Irina Mikitenko, who completed the race with a personal best time of two hours, five minutes and ten seconds.

The time meant she crossed the finish line ten seconds ahead of the second place runner, Tsegaye Kebede of Ethiopia, a bronze medal winner at the Beijing Olympics.
