Olympian pleads for preservation of 800m race
Published: Monday 9th of March 2009
Double Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington is calling for officials not to scrap the 800-metre event in 2012.
Reports suggest the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has been approached in regard to abandoning the event, which Adlington won in Beijing last year.
"I'd say to them [the IOC] you should keep the 800m because it's now a traditional, historic Olympic event and a great race," she told the Daily Telegraph.
She added that people are "astonished" the move is even being considered, comparing it to taking the 5,000 metres out of the Olympic track programme.
The swimmer revealed she would be saddened not to defend her title on home soil when the Olympics heads to London in three years' time, adding that it is her favourite event.
