London announces Olympic security strategy
Published: Friday 27th of February 2009
London has drawn-up its security strategy for the Olympic Games in 2012, with ministers intending on making the event as secure and enjoyable as possible.
The committee says it will remain within its £600 million budget, despite suggestions from critics it may even cost double the amount.
Home secretary Jacqui Smith said the amount would be supported with a "contingency of £238 million" along with the "security budget of the Olympic Delivery Authority" and "parts of the overall Olympic public sector funding package of £9.325 billion".
She assured reporters there was no intention of using the contingency funds at present, with the government keeping its security plans under wraps.
The metropolitan police are believed to have established a specialist team to cope with the event and pinpoint would-be troublemakers.
Visitors to London who want to see how the Olympic preparations are coming along can do so by embarking on Jason's Original Canal Boat Trip, which takes in the sights of the capital.
London pass holders can save themselves £8.50 on the price of an adult ticket and £7.50 on a child's by getting free entry to the experience.
