Lacklustre Chelsea given a schooling by United
Published: Monday 12th of January 2009
Title hopefuls Chelsea were given a thorough going-over by rivals and reigning champions Manchester United at the weekend.
Sunday afternoon at Old Trafford saw Sir Alex Ferguson's men outwit, outclass and outplay Luiz Felipe Scolari's charges as the Red Devil's won the first of their games in hand over the other teams occupying Champions League positions.
Despite a bright opening spell of possession, the Blues never exhibited a cutting edge in front of goal and Nemanja Vidic made the home side's superiority count as he headed home on the stroke of half-time.
Despite lacking a number of key players, including captain Rio Ferdinand plus first-choice central midfielder and long-term injury-lister Owen Hargreaves, United always looked good value for their win and once Wayne Rooney doubled his side's advantage the result was never in doubt.
By the time his strike partner Dimitar Berbatov had danced his way into the six-yard box and slotted home a Cristano Ronaldo cross in injury time, Chelsea's title hopes had been dealt, as Scolari put it after the game, "very big damage".
