Federer breaks Grand Slam record at Wimbledon
Published: Monday 6th of July 2009
Roger Federer has earned his 15th Grand Slam record by beating Andy Roddick at Wimbledon this weekend.
The Swiss tennis star has now surpassed the record set by Pete Sampras, who flew in especially for the final.
"Roger's a friend, he's a great player, he's a good guy," Sampras told reporters, predicting that the 27-year-old could win 17 or 18 majors in total.
Federer added: "I still feel like we share [the achievement] just because he was such a wonderful champion. It's nice that he shows appreciation for what I'm doing."
The five-set final was the longest played at Wimbledon, with the fifth set tie-break consisting of 30 games alone and marking the first time Federer had managed to break his opponent's serve.
Despite Wimbledon being over for another year, visitors to the capital can take advantage of a free tour of the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum with the London Pass.
