European progress for Chelsea in final group game

Published: Sunday 14th of December 2008

Last year's beaten finalists Chelsea sealed their progression to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League with a narrow 2-1 home win over Romanian outfit CFR Cluj on Tuesday evening (December 9th).

Goals from the Ivorian pair of Salomon Kalou and substitute Didier Drogba sealed the win but, while Chelsea were at no stage heading out of the competition, coach Luis Felipe Scolari may well have been concerned that his team's participation in the next round was not finalised before the last group game.

Indeed, the visitors put the cat among the pigeons when Kone rose deftly at the back post to nod home an excellent team goal, cancelling out Kalou's opener. While at that point Bordeaux would have had to score twice in Rome it wasn't until Drogba came off the bench to score a trademark trap-and-poke effort that the home side could rest easy.
