Chelsea stutter as Southend force cup replay
Published: Tuesday 6th of January 2009
Chelsea supporters were left shell-shocked on Saturday as their side conceded a last-gasp goal to set up a replay against League One opponents Southend United in the third round of the FA Cup.
The Blues looked like the favourites to claim the victory and progress to the next stage after Solomon Kalou put his team ahead after just over half an hour, rising unchallenged to score with his head from a Frank Lampard corner.
But the Shrimpers rallied and were eventually rewarded for their grit in the face of the Premier League team's onslaught as Peter Clarke nodded home from a long throw in the 90th minute.
It was a tale of missed chances for the London outfit, who looked out of sorts in front of goal all evening despite their fervent home support. Ivorian target man Didier Drogba twice squandered clear openings when put through in front of goal.
For their parts, the visitors also threatened and few could have had any doubts that the team had earned their right welcome Chelsea to Roots Hall on January 14th.
