Chelsea spurn chance to take league lead against the Hammers
Published: Monday 15th of December 2008
Chelsea couldn't make the most of their chance to go top of the Premier League on Sunday as they laboured to a 1-1 draw with fellow Londoners West Ham at Stamford Bridge.
Luis Felipe Scolari's men found themselves a goal down after a little more than half an hour as Craig Bellamy latched onto a quick thrown-in from Mark Noble before rifling home a left-footed half-volley inside Petr Cech's near post.
The home side were on level terms shortly after the break as Nicolas Anelka scored his 100th goal in the English top flight as he was set free by Frank Lampard's threaded pass.
Having shown a lack of character at home against Tottenham six days previously, Gianfranco Zola's side responded in commendable fashion as they took the game to their hosts, almost going ahead again through Carlton Cole.
However, neither side could make the breakthrough and a hard-fought match ended at one goal apiece, with Chelsea still a point behind pace-setters Liverpool and Manchester United lurking ominously five points adrift but with a game in hand.
Stamford Bridge is the home of Chelsea Football Club and their official stadium tour offers a fascinating insight into the club and the history of the game.
LondonPass holders can gain free access to the tour, saving £15 for adults and £9 for children, with a further ten per cent discount in the Chelsea megastore.
