Chelsea find form to outclass Southend
Published: Thursday 15th of January 2009
A troubling time at Stamford Bridge may be coming to end if last night's 4-1 win in the FA Cup third round replay against Southend United is anything to go by.
Following their capitulation against a rampant Manchester United on Sunday, the Blues were looking for an injection of confidence from the outset but the home side sent the Roots Hall faithful delirious as Barrett scored after a quarter of an hour.
As a team that looked in wont of spirit in recent matches, the visiting players showed their under-fire boss Luiz Felipe Scolari that they still have the mettle to challenge for top honours this season as they asserted their dominance.
After Ballack added has to his scant goal tally as a Chelsea player to level on 45 minutes, the London team never looked like losing the game but it will still be troubling to their boss that it took an early concession to shock them into life.
How much of this result the team can use to their advantage as the race for the Premiership title steps up a gear in the coming weeks remains to be seen.
