Chelsea fall further off the title pace
Published: Monday 2nd of February 2009
Big Phil Scolari's ability to deliver the Premier League crown to the Stamford Bridge faithful was thrown into further doubt as his side succumbed to a late double-blow from Fernando Torres on Sunday.
The Liverpool striker converted chances in the 88th and 90th minutes to seal victory for the home side and leave the visitors three points adrift of their victors and five behind Manchester United, who have played a game less.
With the game looking destined for a stalemate, Scolari's men seemed satisfied to play out a draw as the full-time whistle drew near but the electrifying Torres had other ideas.
Liverpool took advantage of the extra space they were afforded as a result of Frank Lampard's dismissal after an hour and Torres was well-placed to net a low cross to crush Chelsea's spirits.
The striker was on hand once again to compound the London team's misery as the game entered stoppage time, with Ashley Cole being uncharacteristically caught in possession.
