Chelsea crash out of League Cup

Published: Friday 14th of November 2008

Chelsea were unceremoniously dumped out of the League Cup by Championship outfit Burnley after a dramatic penalty shoot-out this week.

Ivorian forward Didier Drogba put the home side in front with a cultured strike just before the half-hour mark.

But the Stamford Bridge faithful were silenced with only twenty minutes to go as Adi Akinbiyi levelled for the visitors.

As extra time progressed, fatigue began to ensue as each team searched for the chance to seal the tie.

Finally, the deadlock was broken in penalty shoot-out sudden death, as goalkeeper Brian Jensen dived his way into Turf Moor history, saving Blues midfielder Jon Mikel Obi's penalty to send Burnley into the quarter-finals.

Chelsea were defeated in last year's League Cup final, losing 2-1 to Tottenham Hotspur.

Upset fans can console themselves with the news that a LondonPass can see them gain free entry to the Chelsea FC Stadium Tour at Stamford Bridge in West London, saving £15 for adults and £9 for children, plus a fantastic 10 per cent discount in the club megastore.
