Brave GB lose Fed Cup play-off

Published: Saturday 14th of February 2009

Great Britain's women tennis players fell at the final hurdle in their bid to win promotion to the Fed Cup World Group II as they succumbed 2-1 to a strong Polish team.

After a 100 per cent record in the group stage, Anne Keothavong gave a tremendously confident performance against Agnieszka Radwanska but ended up losing by the narrowest of margins 7-6 7-6 against a player who is truly one of the game's rising stars.

Elena Baltacha had given the team the best possible start with a powerful 6-4 6-1 win over Katarzyna Piter in the opening rubber, but in the deciding doubles encounter the Polish pair of Klaudia Jans and Alicja Rosolska beat Keothavong and Sarah Borwell 7-5 6-3.

After the defeat, team captain Nigel Sears was full of praise for the spirits he saw from his players: "This time last year we narrowly avoided relegation, this year we came very close to going up so I'm really proud of all the girls' efforts."
