Windsor Castle to harness water power
Published: Friday 18th of July 2008
As people feel the pinch from the rising cost of utilities, even the Queen is doing her bit to cut down her outgoings.
The monarch is to harness the power of water from the River Thames to help cut the soaring cost of fuel bills at Windsor Castle, according to the Sunday Mirror.
A plan to build two hydroelectric turbines at the royal residence was approved four years ago, but the scheme is only now being implemented.
The £1 million eco-friendly project will produce enough power for around 300 homes.
Project manager Alastair Gill commented: "This is an exciting, environmentally friendly project and will provide enough clean energy to meet around one-third of the electricity needs of the castle."
Windsor Castle is more than 900 years old and includes the Drawings Gallery and Queen Mary's dolls' house.
London Pass holders can receive free access to the royal attraction.
