Time running out for London attractions
Published: Wednesday 29th of October 2008
The Tower of London is one of a number of attractions across the world which visitors should see before they are lost forever, according to a new publication.
Frommer's 500 Places to See Before They Disappear lists popular sights and destinations that are under threat from a variety of factors, such as shifts in society and environmental change.
Holly Hughes, the book's co-author, argues the book highlights the consequences to tourists of already well-publicised risks, saying: "The devastation wrought by climate change and direct man-made interference is familiar to all of us.
"But this book is a carefully chosen list of last-chance destinations that eco-conscious travelers can enjoy - if they move sharpish - for possibly the last time."
It is believed the Tower of London, located on the north bank of the Thames, is under threat from rising sea levels which could threaten to overrun the walls guarding the city from the tidal river.
The Tower of London is perhaps best known as the historic home of the Royal Family's crown jewels, which are used in ceremonies such as the investiture of a new monarch.
Fleet-footed visitors can receive free entry to the Tower of London on production of their LondonPass, saving between £9.50 and £16.50, along with a 20 per cent discount in the Armouries cafe and a specially-priced audio guide for £2.50.
