London attractions: Visit The Guards Museum to learn about the iconic regiments

Published: Tuesday 30th of August 2011

For iconic things to do in London, visitors should consider a trip to The Guards Museum.

A range of intriguing artefacts and information regarding the five regiments of the foot guards are available at the centre.

Along with two regiments of Household Cavalry, the Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish and Welsh Guards have the job of guarding the Sovereign and the Royal Palaces.

Currently showing at the museum is the Postcards of the Brigade of Guards exhibition, displaying the military postcards commonly used during the Boer War and World War One.

During the First World War, famous generals, flags, uniforms badges and photographs were frequently pictures on postcards sent home by troops on the front line.

As the conflict became more brutal, postcards conversely became more humorous, with artist Bruce Bairnsfather rising in popularity.

However, for collectors, the most sought after cards tend to be those painted by renowned military artist Harry Payne.
