Go back in time for things to do in London
Published: Thursday 5th of August 2010
In an attempt to give visitors as close a feel to life in the reign of Henry VII, the historians have re-created a wine fountain in the magnificent Base Court.
The impressive Tudor structure is based on the Field of the Cloth of Gold painting and is inspired by the art decor of the surrounding palace.
It stands tall at four metres high and has been built with gold leaf, bronze, lead and timber. It is decorated with the heads of 40 gilded lions and eight brass taps fashioned in the form of those common during the Tudor era.
Also, gracing the fountain in gilded lettering is the inscription - "faicte bonne chere quy vouldra" or "let he who wyshes make good cheere".
The plans of the project were launched when the remains of a conduit or fountain were discovered during an archaeological dig in 2008.
Those interested in learning more about the British royal family can also visit the Royal Mews or The Queen's Year exhibition at the Buckingham Palace.
