Controversy over proposed hotel near historical royal property
Published: Thursday 6th of November 2008
Plans to develop a new hotel opposite Hampton Court Palace have been greeted with widespread controversy.
The proposed new construction work would occupy a six-acre site adjacent to the Palace, which traces its roots back to the 15th century.
The developers Gladedale, who bought the site in 2005, has come under criticism from Historical Royal Palaces, who has called for a public inquiry, as well as leading Tudor expert, historian David Starkey.
Mr Starkey said: "Hampton Court is one of the three most important palace complexes to have survived in Europe.
"It is surrounded by a unique and magical landscape. Anything that gratuitously damages it isn't a national scandal but an international scandal."
A full go-ahead for the plans is expected to be given by Elmbridge Borough Council on November 11th.
LondonPass holders can enjoy the "unique" sights and sounds of Hampton Court Palace for free on production of their LondonPass, a saving of £13.30 for adults and £6.65 for children.
