Sterling lures shoppers to London this Easter

Published: Tuesday 14th of April 2009

Shoppers have been flocking to London this Eater weekend, as the weak pound draws in overseas visitors.

Attractions across the capital were busy, with tourists taking advantage of sterling's frailty.

Retail organisation New West End Company was among those noting the impact of the pound, telling Reuters it was catalysing trade in London.

"The weakening of the pound this year has seen international shoppers, the French, Italians and Americans, flock to the West End to enjoy the favourable exchange rates," New West End spokesman Jace Tyrell told the news agency.

When combined with the much vaunted 'staycation' trend, which has seen Britons opt to stay in the country rather than go abroad to curb expenditure, London has been busy this Easter weekend.

Tower Bridge and the Tower of London were among two of the most popular destinations for tourists in the capital and shoppers hit the high street despite the wet weather.

Visitors from home or overseas can take advantage of the London Pass, which gives free entry to a number of top attractions across the city.
