London shopping 'bucking downward trend'
Published: Monday 16th of March 2009
Shoppers still seem to be heading for London despite the recession, with a rise of retail sales seen in the capital.
Recent figures from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) show that last month, the big city saw a 5.9 per cent rise in its like-for-like sales compared to February 2008.
The statistics show London is faring better than the rest of the country, which collectively saw a 1.8 per cent decrease in retail activity.
Furthermore, the strong euro also attracted overseas visitors, looking to cash-in on the struggling pound and bag themselves a bargain.
Bad weather last month did affect the figures, the BRC suggests, although February was overall a strong month for shopping in London.
Smaller purchases fared better than "big ticket items", the BRC concludes.
