London attraction Portobello Market character under threat

Published: Monday 8th of March 2010

The character of one of the most iconic London attractions is under threat from developers.

Portobello Market may have had its appearance changed significantly by the opening of fashion store All Saints, according to local traders.

Speaking to the BBC, Portobello antique shop owner Marion Gettleson explained that the issue concerns the refurbishment of a part of the market, which has been transformed into a retail outlet.

She added: "It is so utterly out of character with the neighbourhood it's breathtaking."

Portobello Market is popular with tourists visiting the capital, perhaps enroute to other west London attractions such as the Chelsea FC Stadium Tour and the Chelsea Physic Garden.

Commuting between London attractions was made easier earlier this year, with a 50 per cent capacity boost rolled out across the Docklands Light Railway network.

The first fleet of the new three-carriage trains went into service two weeks ago, with an extra carriage added on the busiest route between Lewisham and Bank.
