Elegy at the Curzon Cinemas
Published: Tuesday 12th of August 2008
Until August 21st, film fans can enjoy the Elegy, from the Catalan director Isabel Coixet, at the Curzon Cinemas in London.
The film, which stars legendary British actor Sir Ben Kingsley, is adapted from the Philip Roth novella The Dying Animal and offers a unique perspective on terminal illness, sexual obsession and mens' attitudes towards their female counterparts.
Kingsley plays the role of Kepesh, a professor who falls in love with a beautiful and intelligent student played by Penelope Cruz
Scripted by Nicholas Meyer, the big screen adaptation has weightier feminist overtones that make for a sophisticated and challenging romance story.
Time Magazine film critic Richard Schickel commented: "It's important to see the threat of death as predictably unpredictable, another fine mess we heedlessly fall into. And that Elegy does very powerfully."
