Curzon Soho hosts "the godfather of American avant-garde cinema"

Published: Friday 18th of July 2008

After a day of London sightseeing, film fans might like to sit back and relax with a movie at the Curzon Soho Cinema.

The venue will be showing the 1997 film The Birth of a Nation tomorrow (July 19th) and the director Jonas Mekas will be making an appearance at the end to talk about his work.

A writer, filmmaker and curator, Mr Mekas has been described as "the godfather of American avant-garde cinema".

Born in Lithuania in 1922, Mr Mekas' first film was Guns of the Trees in 1962. His subsequent works include Award Presentation to Andy Warhol, Paradise Not Yet Lost and He Stands in a Desert Counting the Seconds of His Life. He was the founder of The Filmmakers Cooperative and has written film reviews for the countercultural magazine Village Voice since 1958.

London Pass holders can receive free entry to the Curzon Soho Cinema.
