California Dreamin' at the Renoir Cinema

Published: Sunday 22nd of June 2008

As it slowly emerged from the shadow of its Communist past, Romania is experiencing a minor cultural renaissance.

Visitors to the Renoir Cinema in London can catch one of the films which has made a contribution to this emerging 'new wave' of cultural expression, California Dreamin'.

According to Time Out, the film contains "barbed attacks on Romania’s bureaucracy, inaction and neo-capitalist corruption" while some of the scenes are "laugh-out-loud funny".

The action follows the farcical events involving a group of Nato-attached troops from the US and a company of Romanian soldiers on a top secret mission.

The stellar cast includes Armand Assante, whose previous acting credits include American Gangster, Hoffa and Private Benjamin.

Last year, the film won the award for best film in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival.

California Dreamin' will be the cinematic legacy of director Christian Nemescu who tragically died in car crash while the film was in post-production.

London Pass holders can receive free entry to the Renoir Cinema.
