Busker of the Year offers things to do in London's Southbank

Published: Thursday 9th of June 2011

Music lovers keen to find more things to do in London may be tempted to head to the Southbank Centre for the final of the Busker of the Year competition.

The event is being held to celebrate 60 years of the Festival of Britain, and could be a great stopover on route to another London attraction, such as the London Bridge Experience or the Tower Bridge Exhibition.

Held as part of the designer Wayne Hemingway's Vintage festival, more than 70 musicians and singers between the ages of 16 and 25 have made it through to the public vote, organised by the Mayor of London Boris Johnson.

Hemingway explained: "Busking is a true vintage art form. No matter what the genre of music being played, the sound is just about always old school raw and rootsy."

Mr Johnson also hailed the event, noting it would provide a great opportunity for talented musicians to play for an audience of thousands of people - no doubt a great way to experience London's party atmosphere.

For more a more sophisticated experience of London's music scene, visitors may prefer to visit the Royal Albert Hall, which is currently hosting a tribute to revered US composer George Gershwin.
