Enjoy a production of Cinderella on a weekend in London
Published: Tuesday 16th of November 2010
If you are planning to visit London over the festive period then you may want to take in a production of Cinderella by the Royal Ballet.
This classic tale will be retold with the expressive form of dance on the stage of the Royal Opera House from November 20th until December 29th.
Everyone knows the fairytale and it is the perfect way to spend an evening in the capital - after all, when it comes to things to do in London, a visit to the theatre has to be near the top of the list.
This production of Cinderella will be performed to music by Russian composer Prokofiev, who originally devised the score for a show held at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow in 1945.
Since its composition, this particular score for the story has inspired many choreographers and now Sir Frederick Ashton will provide his own interpretation of the tale for audiences in London.
Described as "a stirring adaptation of the classic fairytale", it is a great alternative to the Christmas pantomimes that also run at this time of year.
With a world-class cast of ballet dancers, you won't be disappointed as they take to the stage to put on a moving performance.
You can watch as Cinderella has her rags transformed to a ball gown and her infamous glass slippers by her fairy godmother and enjoy the first dance that she shares with the prince.
The stepsisters provide some light relief with their fighting, while Cinderella's stepmother is suitably cruel.
And with tickets for the show starting from as little as £6, you should be able to afford an evening at the theatre even if you are visiting London on a budget.
But if you do not fancy spending a night at the ballet, then you should certainly look into the other options in London's West End.
The theatre district is one of the premier evening London attractions and as such, there are always a vast number of plays, operas and musicals for visitors to enjoy.
If it is musicals you are looking for, then you will find plenty of popular long-running shows in the venues here.
Among them are Billy Elliot - which also has a ballet theme - Chicago, Grease and the Lion King.
Or for a more Christmas-themed production, why not head to Trafalgar Studios Theatre 2, where you will be able to see a performance of A Christmas Carol. This stage adaptation of the classic Dickens novel is guaranteed to get you in the festive spirit.
Meanwhile, if you are travelling to London with children then you might find that a pantomime is the best choice for an evening's entertainment.
Known for their audience participation and over-the-top comedy, a pantomime is bound to have your little ones in fits of laughter - and you along with them.
There are numerous productions running throughout the winter season in London, including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Jack and the Beanstalk, Sleeping Beauty, Peter Pan and, of course, Cinderella.
The capital's theatre scene is so diverse that you are sure to find something that takes you fancy when looking for things to do in London, so be sure to see what's on in the West End.
If you're spending a weekend Christmas shopping, it could be the perfect way to unwind after a day in the shops and add the finishing touch to your trip to London.
