The Threepenny Ring Cycle at the National Theatre
Published: Tuesday 8th of July 2008
This summer, visitors to the UK wanting to experience some exciting London theatre can watch the Threepenny Ring Cycle before enjoying getting to grips with the sets on National Theatre backstage tours.
Richard Wagner's Threepenny Ring Cycle will be performed by Les Grooms this summer between August 12th and 16th at the South Bank Venue.
Described as a "not a parody of the Ring, but a celebration" by Total Theatre, the famous Wagner opera telling the story of Seigfried, Brunnhilde and the Valkyries is brought to life with brass bands, percussionists and singers.
The 16 hours of music is also condensed to a more palatable 79 minutes worth of "Yiddish folk, oriental scales and klezmer rhythms...gold rings, evil dwarves, giants, gods, magic, dragons and a magnificent apocalyptic ending" leaving plenty of time to enjoy a National Theatre backstage tour.
Described by one guests as a "talking point amongst family and friends for days afterwards", National Theatre backstage tours allow audiences to get a behind-the scenes view of the three auditoriums, front-of-house, scenic workshops and backstage areas with guided tours lasting for roughly one hour and 15 minutes.
