Take an electric car to explore things to do in London?

Published: Tuesday 9th of November 2010

Tourists could soon be making their way to the London Canal Museum, London Zoo or other London attractions in an electric car.

Travelling around the capital in an electric vehicle, whether owned or hired, is set to get easier next year, as Mayor of London Boris Johnson has confirmed the charging network will be established.

Source London will create more charge points than petrol stations, with improvements starting in spring 2011.

Some 1,300 charging points will be established across London by 2013, which Mr Johnson expects to coincide with the increased output of electrical vehicles by manufacturers.

He explained: "Major manufacturers are gearing up to launch more affordable, practical electric cars over the next few years, whilst the cost of traditional fuels are making petrol-free driving an increasingly attractive option.

"By opting for electric in greater numbers, Londoners will also help to cut pollution levels and improve the city's quality of living."

Last month, Mr Johnson welcomed plans to continue with investment in tube upgrades and London's bus network, despite the widespread cutback outlined in the government's Comprehensive Spending Review.
