Olympics 'to help cycling in London'
Published: Saturday 28th of February 2009
Organisers of the 2012 Olympics have announced plans to encourage spectators to use public transport to travel between events.
They anticipate 385,000 people will use the London transport during the games, with an £11.5 million set to be spent on improving links, including cycle routes.
"Creating a good walking and cycling experience for people during the games could see more people choosing this travel option afterwards," says John Armitt, chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority.
Mayor of London Boris Johnson said the games would leave a transport legacy for the city, which he hopes will give way to a "cycling revolution" on London's streets.
Hire bikes will help stimulate these routes, he adds, as will establishing new cycle super-highways.
Owners of the LondonPass don't have to wait until 2012 to see the city by bike as it offers a free visit to the London Bicycle Tour Company, saving £18 per adult.
Visitors can try their hand at navigating the streets of London on a mountain bike or traditional cycle while taking in the sights of the city.
