London presses ahead with cycle hire scheme

Published: Tuesday 28th of April 2009

Plans are in motion for London's cycle hire scheme to be in place by May 2010.

Applications for around 400 cycle docking stations have been issued, which will enable people to pick up and drop off bicycles in the city.

"Much like hailing a cab, people will be able to pick up one of 6,000 bikes and zip around town to their hearts content," says mayor of London Boris Johnson.

He adds that the service will be quick and easy and will make London a "more liveable city".

Furthermore, the service will be available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with the plans aimed at reducing congestion on the capital's roads.

The stations are to be located every 300 metres to make using the service efficient.

For the time being, visitors can see the city with the London Bicycle Tour Company, saving themselves £18.95 per ticket with the London Pass.
