First baby boy born on London Underground

Published: Sunday 31st of May 2009

A 32-year-old woman has given birth to a baby boy in the rather unusual surroundings of a London Underground station.

Only two children were thought to have ever been born on the transport route - both girls - but a third has now been delivered at London Bridge station.

Staff on the platform helped mother Michelle Jenkins while they waited for an ambulance, although the baby boy was delivered before it arrived.

Ms Jenkins was whisked off to the staff room, which is where she eventually gave birth to her premature baby.

The previous baby to be born on the network came last year, when Julia Kowalska gave birth at 21:35 BST on December 19th.

The London Underground is perhaps one of the most convenient ways of travelling around the city and is made even easier with the London Pass and travel card, available for an additional £7 a day.
