'Green' transport to London attractions in Richmond

Published: Tuesday 7th of April 2009

London attractions in Richmond are set to become more easily accessible, following a new funding initiative from Transport for London (TfL).

Richmond upon Thames will benefit from £4.2 million of investment over three years as part of the Smarter Travel Richmond initiative to encourage environmentally-friendly travel.

Greener travel routes will be promoted under the scheme, including better signage and mapping for pedestrians - making it easier to find London attractions such as Kew Gardens and Richmond Theatre in the area.

Peter Hendy, London's transport commissioner, explained that the scheme is intended to provide residents and visitors with the confidence to travel sustainably in the borough.

He said: "Cycling, walking or travelling by public transport are not just the greenest options - they're often the quickest, cheapest and most convenient options too.

"The Smarter Travel programme has already proven to be hugely influential in Sutton and I look forward to seeing similar successes in Richmond."

Smarter Travel follows the launch of the Richdance Festival, which is took place in Richmond Park this weekend.
