Brits 'holidaying at home more during recession'
Published: Tuesday 31st of March 2009
The economic difficulties could see more Brits visiting London attractions as they swap exotic destinations for something closer to home, one industry commentator suggests.
Coupled with the poor exchange rate of the pound against the euro, UK travellers are cutting back on overseas trips and instead taking domestic holidays, explains Helen James, communications manager at UKinbound.
"There are all sorts of things to do in all the different regions. There is something for everyone," she says of UK holidays, such as city breaks in London.
Figures from VisitEngland show that 90 per cent of Brits are cutting back on overall spending amid the recession, with one in five of those who went abroad last year saying they may switch to a UK holiday in 2009 to save money.
Nearly two-thirds of Brits are expected to holiday in England this year, meaning London attractions and others could see a rise in visitor numbers.
Brits looking to save money on their London break can use a London Pass to help their pounds go further in the capital.
