See in the New Year in style on a trip to London
Published: Tuesday 14th of December 2010
If you want to see in 2011 in spectacular fashion then there is no better place to go than London - even if you are on a tight budget.
While there are plenty of all night parties taking place all over the capital on New Year's Eve, you can still enjoy an evening out for very little money.
Undoubtedly, one of the best ways to celebrate on New Year's Eve is to watch the free fireworks display put on ever year by the Thames.
Enjoy watching numerous London attractions light up with the stunning and colourful show of rockets that dominates the city's skyline as the clock strikes 12.
The London Eye is usually lit up and resembles a giant Catherine wheel, adding to the effect of the show.
Access will be closed to certain areas around the site of the fireworks display but there are numerous viewing areas set up for the public - be sure to get there early if you want one of the best vantage points.
The Victoria Embankment opposite the London Eye is one of the optimum places to go if you want to get a great view of all the action. Meanwhile, Westminster Bridge and Waterloo Bridge will both be closed to traffic to allow revellers to get a great view down the Thames as the fireworks are reflected in the river.
A viewing area will also be set up directly behind the London Eye, giving you the chance to see the landmarks on the other side of the river - such as the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben - as the colourful display takes place in the night sky.
After the excitement of the fireworks on New Year's Eve, you may have a quiet day planned for January 1st. However, if you are looking for things to do in London on New Year's Day, you will not be disappointed with the options available.
One of the best ways to enjoy the first day of 2011 will be to watch the annual New Year's Day Parade, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
The parade itself runs from 12:00 until 15:00 GMT although there will be activities taking place all day to mark the festival.
Starting at Piccadilly, the route will take some 10,000 performers across the city, finishing in Parliament Street. Some of those involved in the entertainment have travelled from all over the world, with 20 different nationalities taking part this year.
Each of London's boroughs will also have entries in the event, with acts expected to include marching bands, cheerleaders and acrobats to name just a few.
So, if you want to enjoy an exciting and vibrant day in the capital then join the crowds lining the parade route and cheer on the performers. You can expect to find a friendly atmosphere on the city's streets as you wander around and sample all events on offer on New Year's Day.
Heading to London to see in the 2011 does not have to be an expensive prospect - with numerous free events to keep you entertained.
And if you want to escape from the cold for a short while then you will find that the parade route runs past a number of London attractions, giving you the perfect opportunity to enjoy a bit of sightseeing while you wait for the singing and dancing to reach you.
